Read Chapters 1 - 7 (Basics of Botany: these chapters are a review of what you learned in basic Biology)
Ch 2 Notes Topics: photosynthesis vs chemosynthesis, table 2-1 (overview of plant structures), animals (behavior based on movements, diversity based on number of species) vs plants (behavior based on growth, diversity based on variety of tissues), field guides (for species identification), examples of diverse forms and functions of similar tissues (stopped on PAGE 21)
Feb 14 - 23
Finish Review of Biology Basics (Read and Discuss Ch 03 - 04). Ch 03 topics include cells, organelles, membranes and transport, growth and division (mitosis). Special Note - plant cell types: shoots/root tips, leaf/stem epidermis, epidermal gland cells, green leaf cells, root epitermis, vascular cells, flower cells (petal cells, scent cells, nectary cells, stamen cells, carpel cells, fruit cells. Ch 04 topics include growth phase, S phase (endoreduplication and gene amplification for high rates of protein synthesis in rapidly dividing), mitosis, meiosis, independent division of chloroplasts and mitochondria,

As a whole class: research, design, build, and nurture an indoor window-garden.
Group Notes: Botany Project Google Doc
So far...
- Mar 14 brainstorming/research notes - indoor plant species, indoor growing conditions, soil vs hydroponics, rough diagram of classroom window garden, watering system, horizontal vs vertical structure
- Mar 19 group choices 1 - soil, micro-sprinkler/drip hybrid watering system, horizontal structure with two troughs, water reservoir and pump to recycle nutrients
- Mar 21 group choice 2 - windowboxes: english ivy, snake grass, echinacia. hanging plants: spider plant, fern. Suculent: jade plant, aloe vera.
- Mar 28 group notes - learned about types of soils, price per volume, chose MG potting soil (moisture control), chose table/shelf base to support weight of two window boxes, heavy equipment on floor, began to build shopping list using Home Depot website
- bonus points - visit a large professional greenhouse/gardening center and speak to the person in charge to ask questions about gardening (horticulturist), write a report of the experience
- see Group Notes for more details
April 9 - April 13
- Gather materials for project construction
- Build shelving unit
- Purchase plants, soil, and fertilizer, transplant
Finished Stage 1 Construction!!!
