Dissections in Biology

Purpose

With modern technology and wonderful videos available today, why do biology teachers still insist that students participate in dissections? Educators know the value of assisting students to develop both theoretical knowledge and practicle knowledge -- its the book-smarts versus street-smarts debate. In my experience, there is no substitute for direct handling of plants and animals to give students a lasting appreciation for the complexities of life. If you are an adult, what do you remember most about your biology class? Was it the dry textbook? Certainly the answer includes hands-on learning activities. In terms of education theory, dissections offer a great advantage for kinaesthetic learning. Addressing the concerns over animal rights, a carefully done dissection lab can foster a healthy respect for living things, especially when connected with discussions about ethics in science. Another goal is to help students deepen their understanding of themselves. In terms of practicle life skills, it is always the best case scenario when a doctor works with an educated patient in taking care of his or her medical needs. There is value in this old-fashioned approach to education. Overall, I have had very positive responses from the thousands of students I have worked with in performing dissections at the high school level. However, I have provided a virtual dissection experience as an alternative for any who do not wish to participate.
